OSHA Announces Changes to Fall Protection Requirements for Residential Construction
Under the new policy, effective September 15th, 2011, workers engaged in residential construction six (6) feet or more above lower levels must be protected by conventional fall protection (i.e., guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems) or alternative fall protection measures allowed under 1926.501(b) for particular types of work. A personal fall arrest system may consist of a full body harness, a deceleration device, a lanyard, and an anchor point. (See the definition of “personal fall arrest system” in 29 CFR 1926.500). If an employer can demonstrate that fall protection required under 1926.501(b)(13) is infeasible or presents a greater hazard it must implement a written, site-specific fall protection plan meeting the requirements of 29 CFR 1926.502(k). The fall protection plan must specify alternative measures that will be used to eliminate or reduce the possibility of employee falls. 3M offers a personal fall arrest kit (pictured above) which may be appropriate for residential roofing applications. The kit includes anchorage, body protection, and connecting devices. | download flyer OSHA Unveils Top 10 Most Cited Violations for 2011 On Monday, October 31, 2011, OSHA unveiled its top 10 most cited violations during a live presentation at the National Safety Congress in Philadelphia.
- Fall Protection, with 7,139 violations, topped the list this year switching places with last year’s first place holder, Scaffolding. OSHA said 260 workers died in 2010 from falls, which continue to be the leading cause of death in construction.
- Scaffolding came in a close second place, with 7,069 violations. OSHA noted that incidents involving this category often result from improper placement and setup of a scaffold.
- Hazard Communication – 6,538 violations – OSHA said most violations involved not having a written Hazard Communication program, a lack of a training program, and a lack of MSDS management system.
- Respiratory Protection – 3,944 violations – Roughly five million workers in the U.S. are required to wear respirators. OSHA said employers must provide workers with proper medical evaluations and fit testing.
- Lockout/Tagout – 3,639 violations – Not following proper Lockout/Tagout procedures can result in unexpected energization of parts and a release of hazardous energy. This standard prevents 50,000 injuries and 120 fatalities a year, OSHA said. A worker spends 24 days away from work to recover from a LOTO injury, the agency noted.
- Electrical (Wiring) – 3,584 violations – Working with electricity involves working on overhead lines, circuit assemblies, cables harnesses, and other equipment.
- Powered Industrial Trucks – 3,432 violations – OSHA said there were 8,410 injuries in the U.S. in 2009 related to forklifts.
- Ladders – 3,244 violations – Ladders make up about 25 percent of falls, OSHA said. Hazards include improper use of siderails, unintended use of ladders, and defective ladders.
- Electrical – 2,863 violations – Many violations involve not following electrical installation requirements.
- Machine Guarding – 2,556 violations – Improper machine guarding can result in broken bones, finger lacerations, and hand crushes. In 2009, 5,930 workers suffered amputations from machine-related incidents.

WrightGrip Now Available in Metric Sizes
Wright Tool's popular WrightGrip design has up to 50 percent more strength than traditional Wright open-end wrenches, and is up to 80 percent stronger than comparable competitors’ wrenches. The innovative, high-strength, anti-slip design is available on Wright Tool open-end and combination wrenches in a range of metric sizes from 7 to 24 mm. The design incorporates a series of strategically placed teeth or grooves on the insides of the wrench's two jaws. These teeth allow for a better seating of the wrench on a fastener. Also, the wrench opening's back end has been slightly enlarged with extra metal in this high-stress area, helping to stiffen the wrench jaws and decreasing the chance of their spreading under heavy loads. The modified U-shape design on the back end further reduces stress and improves performance.
